Unified Communications Grow into 2012
Unified Communications Grow into 2012Earlier embraced as a future trend, unified communications (UC) continue to make inroads. Current trends are reported in the 2012 Unified Communications Survey conducted by Information Week. Companies and organizations that have deployed and utilized UC jumped from 30% in April 2010 to 36% now. Impressively, another 31% plan to deploy this communications venue within the next two years. Survey respondents comprise 71% from companies with 500 or more employees and the remainder from companies with 10,000 or more workers. Overall, the study concludes that businesses can do more with less by opting for UC, thanks to advances in technology.

Acoustic Emission

RNDT, Inc.
Minimize Leakage Level and Noise in
One Package

Schuster Electronics, Inc.
Acoustic EmissionAt RNDT, several conventional and modal AE systems, with the most advanced hardware and software available, provide our acoustic emission Level II and III technicians the tools to offer many production, in-service, and research related examinations. We can handle a variety of specialized AE examinations in both lab and field settings.
Minimize Leakage Level and Noise in One PackageEven if medical-grade certified, combining a filter and/or another power supply can cause your application to exceed the 300 microamps leakage limit. Schuster Electronics offers theCosel PMA Series, medical-grade AC-DC power supplies, with built-in dual-choke filter that minimizes both leakage and noise. It's like an AC line filter and power supply in one-package.

Intuitive Bluetooth Speaker with AM/FM
Intuitive Bluetooth Speaker with AM/FMDesigners have created an intuitive Bluetooth speaker that's easy to use. To operate the cylindrically shaped Hidden Radio and Bluetooth Speaker, users simply twist the movable cap to turn it on and adjust the volume. Delivering a 30 hr battery life, this speaker is capable of 80 dB sound and incorporates an AM/FM radio plus a 3.5 mm audio jack.
Mini Wireless Speakers Deliver the Features
Mini Wireless Speakers Deliver the FeaturesOne of the latest Bluetooth speaker systems is Logitech's Mini Boomboxfeaturing backlit touch controls plus a microphone for use as a speakerphone. A USB-rechargeable battery delivers power for 10 hours, and a 3.5 mm jack provides support for additional devices. See it compared to the twice the price Jawbone Jambox.

Rubber Returns to the Road in Noise Barriers
Rubber Returns to the Road in Noise BarriersDisposing of used rubber vehicle tires continues to be a global environmental problem. Fortunately, the European Ekopan project has a workable solution: reusing recycled rubber from tires in roadway noise barriers. As it turns out, utilizing the porous material to partially replace raw materials in conventional barriers results in improved noise absorption and less weight than concrete alternatives.
Piezoelectric Material for MEMS
Piezoelectric Material for MEMSExpected to find application in sonar, ultrasonics, sensing, and energy harvesting, a new piezoelectric material delivers 2-4x the movement of predecessors. Developed by University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers, the PMN-PT material expands with greater force and yields stronger electrical signals (video). Described as a "much bigger bend for your buck," the high efficiency material is targeted for silicon microelectromechanical systems.

Overall Acoustic Level

OROS
Custom Sound-proofing and Acoustic
Materials

Merryweather Foam, Inc.
Overall Acoustic LevelThe OROS Overall Acoustic is an optional NVGate plug-in for all OROS 3-Series Analyzers. With an OROS 3-Series you get a multi-channel analyzer, so why not turn your unit into a true multi-channel sound level meter. The OVA plug-in extends the analyzer capabilities to a comprehensive acoustic measurement system.
Custom Sound-proofing and Acoustic MaterialsLooking for a sound-absorption solution? Not sure what you need? You're not alone! Acoustical-absorption products are available in a range of mediums and designs that meet the specifications of engineers working in diverse industries. You may find that many commonly used sound absorbing products cost more than innovative, newcomer solutions.

World's Fastest Internet Connection
World's Fastest Internet ConnectionFor the world's fastest Internet connection at 120 Gbps, Cisco and Telia put together a 300 km long connection utilizing a fiber network, CRS-3 routers, and other special equipment from the two companies. In theory, 750,000 users could stream music at the same time and download a complete movie in 0.047 seconds. The feat set a record for network capacity utilization and more.
Silencing 'Growling' Servos
Silencing 'Growling' ServosServomotor instability can often cause "growling" at higher frequencies — a common problem that can be solved by reducing the gain on the speed controller. Marcus Schick, Siemens motion control business, relates how to eliminate the undesired growling noise of servo driveswithout adversely affecting performance and increasing position error. In brief, lower inertia ratios cut the probability that system resonances will become a problem.

Boosting Hard-to-Hear Sounds
Boosting Hard-to-Hear SoundsModifying phones and other audio devices so that users can hear better by improving individual hearing-loss fingerprints goes far beyond just boosting the volume. One way to accomplish that is to create a standard sound-calibration test. Toward that end, ACEHearing is a new smartphone app that utilizes a simple test to tailor mobile device output to improve listeners' hearing.
Do Workers Need a Quad-core Mobile Device?
Do Workers Need a Quad-core Mobile Device?Nvidia's Tegra 3 quad-core processor boosts performance 5x overall and 3x graphically vs its predecessor. While business software runs reliably on dual core, this upgrade homes in on power consumption. For less demanding tasks, a fifth processor runs at 500 MHz with four main processors off. The net result is 61% less power consumption or a 12 hr battery life.

Smartphone Spying or Not?
Smartphone Spying or Not?When it comes to the legality of carriers monitoring 150 million smartphones, the jury is still out. Allegedly, virtually anything a smartphone user does is being monitored by software — unbeknownst to users. This includes keystrokes, numbers called, Web sites visited, location, searches, and more. The U.S. Senate will be investigating whether the Carrier IQ application is infringing on privacy or not.

Super Cool DIY Electronic Music
Super Cool DIY Electronic MusicBuilding your own mini electronic instruments and synthesizers sounds like quite an undertaking for even established audiophiles. Not! These credit-card sized devices — bass generators, drum machines, micro-synthesizers, and more — can be put together in two hours. As depicted in this video, a wireless network empowers all instruments to jam together. Photocells also allow reaction via light, for instance, controlling envelope, filter, and pitch of a drum machine.
