It’s about time – and only the beginning
Dear Asad,
I’m writing from Bangalore, India, where a guilty verdict has just been issued by the Permanent People’s Tribunal. On trial were the “Big 6” pesticide corporations who control so much of the world’s food and farming. Their crimes, as convicted?
“Gross, systematic violations of human rights to life, health and livelihood.”
When this verdict was issued hours ago the crowd erupted in a roar of applause, and later, congratulations were shared in at least seven languages. Meanwhile I served as a translator and tweeted my heart out. What an incredible honor to be here, watching the PAN International network at work.
What comes next is up to you» This tribunal was many years in the making, and possible only with the generous support of PAN people like you. Truly.
Events like the Permanent People’s Tribunal build power and momentum for the long haul. PAN North America’s members have been extraordinary and visionary in supporting global work that takes decades to see through.
Tonight, I'm elated and exhausted, both. But that's just tonight. Tomorrow, the PAN International network gathers to think together about what comes next, and I'm energized and honored to take part.
As for the guilty verdict, it’s about time — and this is only the beginning. Nearly 30 years after the original "Dirty Dozen" campaign that launched PAN International, I feel another global groundswell coming on.
Thanks for making this possible,
Kathryn Gilje, Co-Executive Director
