Wafer Inspection Boosts LED Yields Taiwan-based Epistar, a leading manufacturer of LED chips, has adopted KLA-Tencor's Candela® substrate and epitaxy (epi) wafer inspection system in its production process. The tool provides automated inspection of sapphire substrates to ensure vendor quality and helps pinpoint root cause defects that reduce yields. As LED manufacturers move to larger wafer sizes, Candela can detect and classify such sub-micron defects as micro-cracks and scratches, polishing and brushing streaks, and chemical residues. | Vision Speeds Badge Inspection Thanks to machine vision, inspecting dosimeter badges worn by those working near radiation sources is no longer a tedious manual process. Germany's Helmholz-Zentrum now relies on an automated system featuring a FireWire camera mounted on a bellows stage above a reel containing film from the badges. Data from the camera is transferred to a PC and processed using Halcon software. The system analyzes some 120,000 individual badges per month. |

Quality Inspection on the Go Need a fast, accurate, and mobile alternative to pen-and-paper gathering of data to support the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP)? Guardian Business Solutions is offering a new Quality Inspection Capture (QUIC) app for android and iPhone/iPad users. The software saves time and provides useful information to the quality department on troublesome parts, where problems are occuring in the process, and what corrective actions are being taken. | Tearing Down Data Silos Major pharmaceutical manufacturers are increasingly linking operations management software with Quality Management Systems (QMS) that trigger corrective and preventive actions (CAPA), reports PharmTech. By marrying these data systems, a problem during production automatically triggers a deviation process within a CAPA system. Result: faster resolution of deviations and reduced shipment delays. Ultimately, companies want a single system that provides full traceability of requirements through testing, defects, and corrective action. See related video. |

How Green is Your Worker? A new credentialing module developed by the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council (MSSC) can help companies train production workers according to national standards related to "green production." By using this Green Production Module (GPM), workers and students can earn an industry-recognized and portable MSSC "Green Production" Certificate. MSSC defines "green production" as workplace activities across all manufacturing sectors that "require the use of equipment, technologies, and processes that will improve the environmental performance of manufacturing companies." | Tools to Ease Compliance Headaches Every year brings more regulations affecting product design, from RoHS rules on hazardous substances and WEEE regulations on electronics waste to the new REACH directives on chemicals. This Design News article describes tools engineers can tap to cope with regulatory challenges. Among them: Agilent's compliance data base on test and measurement components and Dassault Systèmes' ENOVIA Materials Compliance Central, which cross-references multiple regulations. |

Chip-to-Board Failure Analysis For engineers involved in electronics design, SystemNav software integrates circuit debugging with CAD navigation to allow rapid signal traces on chips, stacked dies, multichip modules, and printed circuit boards. EE Timesreports that the tool lets fab teams trace signals from chip to board, then back to chip. Finally, engineers can navigate failure analysis tools to specific locations to determine the root cause of the fault. | Standard Targets Pipeline NDT Companies that need to inspect long lengths of above-ground steel pipes will now have specific guidelines for wave guide nondestructive testing. A new international standard, ASTM E27775, addresses the use of Piezoelectric Effect Transduction to detect areas of degradation on pipelines. Experts note that, despite its cost-saving benefits, guided wave testing is among the most difficult forms of nondestructive test, and its success depends greatly on the skills of the test operator. |

Machine Vision Masters Braille In the European Union, every medication package must provide essential product information in Braille to serve one million blind consumers. To ensure the accuracy of that information, reports Laser Focus World, Germany's IDS Imaging Development has designed a vision system that recognizes Braille dots on packaging and evaluates their tactile quality with high precision. The system, featuring a USB uEye camera and high-power LED lighting, captures 25 frames per second at full resolution. | Share Your Thoughts . . . About This Month's Topic How to Stop Engineering Erosion?
Top universities like Georgetown and Penn are reporting that less than half of graduating science and engineering majors are actually going to work in those fields, with many instead choosing jobs in consulting, IT, and finance. What is needed to keep more graduates interested in STEM careers — better pay, more aggressive recruiting, more varied job experiences? |
