Flight of Fancy? How does the parent company of Airbus view the future of flight? The answer: hypersonic travel, as in two and one-half hours from Tokyo to Paris. The company envisions future hypersonic craft able to take off and land using conventional jet engines. However, at 5 km altitude they would transition to rocket engines, then to ramjets — ultimately reaching Mach 4 at 32 km above Earth.

More from Defense & Security Technology… | Efficient OLEDs Bend Scientists at the University of Toronto report making highly-efficient OLEDs on plastic, a technique that offers many advantages over current technology. Highly-efficient OLEDs tend to be fragile devices deposited on glass but the new approach replaces the heavy metal-doped glass used as a high-refractive-index material with a thin layer of tantalum oxide. Watch one researcher explain the breakthrough.

Exploiting the Potential of Plastic Gears
"Plastic gears are now being used in drives of higher power and higher precision than in the past. They afford appliance designers dramatic opportunities to reduce drive cost, noise, and weight. However, due to the properties of engineering resins, plastic gears require a greater engineering effort than metal gears. This paper examines current applications of plastic gears and explains the payoffs in reduced cost, weight, and noise." Read this article in its entirety.
